WAN Services

Maritime Security & SSAS

WAN coordinates specialist support for Ship Security Alert System (SSAS) monitoring, testing and escalation procedures through authorised maritime security providers. SSAS is a covert security-alert system — it is separate from vessel tracking or AIS.

Discuss Your SSAS Requirement

What SSAS is — and is not: The Ship Security Alert System is a SOLAS-mandated covert distress signal that transmits a silent alert to shore-side contacts when a security threat is detected on board. It does not track vessel position in normal operation and is entirely separate from AIS, LRIT or fleet-management systems. How WAN works: WAN acts as a coordination and introduction point, engaging specialist maritime security providers suited to each vessel's flag, trading area and company requirements. WAN does not operate a monitoring centre.

Coordinated SSAS Services

Each area below is coordinated by WAN and delivered through specialist maritime security providers. Scope and procedures are agreed with the client before arrangements are confirmed.

24/7 SSAS Alert Monitoring & Management

The Ship Security Alert System (SSAS) is a covert distress signal required under SOLAS Chapter XI-2. When activated, it transmits a silent alert to nominated shore-side contacts without alerting those on board. WAN coordinates access to specialist providers who operate 24/7 monitoring centres to receive, verify and manage these alerts on behalf of shipowners and managers.

Scheduled Testing & Notification Procedures

Regular SSAS testing is required to confirm system operability and to ensure monitoring contacts are current. WAN coordinates scheduled test programmes with specialist providers, including advance notification to relevant authorities and flag state contacts where required, so that test activations are correctly identified and logged.

Alert Escalation to Nominated Contacts & Authorities

When a genuine SSAS alert is received, the response must follow agreed escalation procedures — notifying nominated company security officers, flag state authorities and, where appropriate, coastal state authorities. WAN coordinates the establishment of these procedures with specialist providers, ensuring escalation paths are documented, tested and maintained in line with the vessel's flag requirements and the company's Ship Security Plan.

Specialist providers: SSAS monitoring and management is delivered by authorised maritime security organisations with the operational infrastructure, trained personnel and regulatory relationships required for this service. Provider details are shared during the proposal stage and in any required disclosures. WAN's role is to coordinate the introduction and ensure the arrangement is suited to the vessel's specific requirements.
